Soils
The forest floor grows each year. Trees shed their leaves and needles, sticks and branches break off, and old timbers come down. Animals pass through and leave their droppings. Mosses, fungi, and lichen make their homes above and beneath this litter. If you look just a few inches down, you’ll even find the spongy network known as hyphae, and everything is, of course, teeming with beneficial bacteria you can’t even see. They all work together to create the rich, nutrient-dense earth that sustains the largest ecosystems on earth—no synthetic fertilizer needed. Your plants want the same.

Compost
Gardeners choose compost because it’s lightweight and nutrient dense. A mix of leaves, grass clippings, yard prunings, manure, and shavings: all organic matter. Compost provides the ideal soil for perennials, vegetables, and overseeding lawns. It has high water retention and lower drainage capacity. Compost also naturally has a higher pH than loam so ask us for advice if you’re planting acid loving plants like azaleas, rhododendrons, holly and pine.

Loam
Choose loam if you need more structure to your soil. Loam is reclaimed soil with less organic matter and higher mineral content: sand, silt, clay and fines. It has higher drainage and lower water retention capacity. Loam is used to build up the base of a new lawn or to fill in an area where you need better drainage.

Biochar
If you choose a custom blend, we can add varying amounts of our biochar to improve nutrient availability within your soil. Biochar absorbs water and nutrients and then releases them to your plants over time. Biochar has a honeycomb structure, giving a single gram the same surface area of half an acre laid flat. Use biochar to greatly improve your soil’s holding capacity.

Custom Blends
We can blend the right mix of loam, compost, biochar or mulch to give your garden exactly what it needs. Superloam is a mix of compost and loam. Compost with biochar creates a supercharged nutrient and water-holding powerhouse. Adding compost to mulch creates a surface material that has superior weed suppressant capabilities. All products are available to be tested to ensure we are meeting your pH needs.

Soil Analysis
On-site soil analysis provides homeowners with the confidence that they are choosing the right product for their project. We can schedule a visit to assess your site conditions (sun, shade, rocks, trees, water shedding) and soil conditions (pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sand, clay, etc), and hear your garden plans to determine what blend and amendments you need for the plants you want to grow.
