Mulches

The role of mulch is to inhibit evaporation and suppress weed formation. In the forest, a layer of leaves called “litter” is replenished each fall. These leaves naturally decompose and successively create the compost beneath the surface. The further down you look through the layers, the more moisture and more life you find. Finely shredded leaves, therefore, are the way to take what the forest teaches us and adapt it to the human aesthetic.

Leaf Mulch

“Frosting for the garden,” this mulch is much finer and falls much more uniformly than any bark mulch. Made of decomposed leaves and organic fines, we refer to this as our Grower’s Mulch. It has a higher nutrient content and more naturally blends into the bed. Leaf mulch offers superb water retention and weed suppression due to its uniformity.

Natural Wood Mulch

A natural brown color, this mulch is primarily made from wood chips and firewood tailings. It is a hardwood and softwood blend, unlike the hemlock or pine mulches you typically see.

Dyed Wood Mulch

We dye our own mulch and wood mulch on site to create the popular dark “black” color. This black pigment is the same grade as used in personal care/make-up products and food-safe packaging. It does not leach once it’s in the soil.

Blow-In Service

For the best coverage and smoothest appearance, inquire about getting your mulch blown in by our truck. This method creates fine layers which hold better on slopes, fill in better on uneven terrain, and suppress weeds better. We can get a fine coverage under low shrubs and top dress beds, lawns or even struggling groundcovers. “Blown-In” is available for all our soils and mulches.
